Babies are admitted to the hospital's NICU when they are delivered prematurely, have health issues, or have a rough birth. The acronym NICU represents "neonatal intensive care unit." Babies receive round-the-clock care from a team of professionals there. When their babies are in the NICU, parents are allowed to visit and spend time with them. Perhaps other family members could pay a visit, but only a small number at a time and only during certain hours. Children who come to the NICU should be well, not unwell, and fully immunized. Before entering the NICU, all visitors are required to wash their hands. (The room and the area beside the NICU door will include a sink and antibacterial soap.) This is an essential component of maintaining the NICU as sterile as possible to protect the infants from infection. Though you might be tempted, first with the nurse before bringing any toys, decorations, or other objects into your baby's room. These items should be simple to clean if permitted (stuffed animals not allowed). Certain hospitals permit parents to attach photographs or other embellishments to the exterior of an infant's incubator.
