A level 3 NICU, also known as a level III NICU, is a type of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that may provide treatment for newborns who are extremely tiny or critically ill. Neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, neonatologists, and other professionals work on-site at Level 3 NICUs and are available around-the-clock. Subspecialty care facilities or subspecialty NICUs are other names for level 3 NICUs. Critically sick neonates of any gestational age and birth weight should be cared for in a level 3 NICU, as should infants delivered at fewer than 32 weeks gestational age and weighing less than 1500 grams (53 ounces or 3.3 pounds).1 According to studies, babies born at level 3 hospitals who have very low birth weight and early had better results. Doctors advise pregnant women at danger of giving birth prematurely or to babies who are underweight to be sent to these facilities to give birth.
