A level 3 NICU, also known as a level III NICU, is a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) capable of caring for newborn babies who are very small or very sick. Level 3 NICUs have a diverse staff on-site, including neonatologists, neonatal nurses, and respiratory therapists who are available around the clock. Subspecialty care centers and subspecialty NICUs are other names for Level 3 NICUs. Infants born before 32 weeks gestation and weighing less than 1500 grams (53 ounces or 3.3 pounds), as well as critically ill newborns of any gestational age and birth weight, should be cared for in a level 3 NICU. Level 3 birth centres have been shown in studies to have better outcomes for very low birth weight and premature infants. That is why doctors advise pregnant women who are at risk of having premature or low birth weight babies to be transported to these centres to give birth.
