A level 3 NICU, also recognized as a level III NICU, is a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that can care for very small or very sick newborn babies. Level 3 NICUs have a diverse on-site staff, including neonatologists, neonatal nurses, and respiratory therapists who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Level 3 NICUs are also known as subspecialty care centers and subspecialty NICUs. Infants born before 32 weeks gestation and weighing less than 1500 grams (53 ounces or 3.3 pounds) should be cared for in a level 3 NICU, as should critically ill newborns of any gestational age and birth weight. Studies have shown that level 3 birth centres have better outcomes for very low birth weight and premature infants. That is why doctors advise pregnant women who are at risk of having premature or low birth weight babies to have their babies delivered at these facilities.
